AMD’s RX 7900 XT is set to go head-to-head with the Nivida RTX 40-series. From release date, price, specs, and more, we’ve got all the latest details that you need to know about.
AMD’s RDNA 3-based RX 7900 XT is not the top-end chip that’s pipped to be released by AMD. The RX 7900 XTX has that privilege. However, AMD is uniquely positioned to undercut Nvidia’s pricing for its RTX 40-series, where the RTX 4090 costs $1599 and RTX 4080 16GB sits pretty at $1199.
AMD is using the RX 7900 XT in order to undercut the 4080, and upsell its slightly more powerful bigger brother, the RX 7900 XTX.
It appears to be slightly longer than the previous-generation AMD GPUs, in addition to this, there is a neat, red strip on the Made by AMD models. Most notably, the RX 7900 XT will not be using the 12VHPWR connector, which has been causing some RTX 4090 power ports to melt. Nvidia is working to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
The RX 7900 XT will be a high-end offering, so expect to see a measurable jump in performance when compared to other graphics cards. With GPU prices tumbling, will AMD be able to get a competitive advantage over Team Green? It’s likely that the RX 7900 XT will be sitting on the best GPU tier list, once it releases.

You can buy the AMD RX 7900 XT from all good electronics manufacturers. We expect that all good hardware retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon, and more will be stocking the GPU. However, if you want one of AMD’s own models, you may be best off waiting for the listing to go live on their official website.
We should note that we have also heard some notes that the supply of these GPUs could be quite limited. Therefore, you should move quickly, if you wanted to purchase one. Some AIB cards are also looking to land a couple of weeks after release, so you might have some trouble finding one to purchase at launch.

AMD released the RX 7900 XT on December 13, 2022. This is slightly later than we anticipated, and the GPU will launch alongside the RX 7900 XTX.

How much is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT?
The AMD RX 7900 XT costs $899 USD. This is a significant undercut, compared to Nvidia’s RTX 4080, which starts at $1199. The announcement of the pricing was met with cheers from the audience. However, it’s likely that we might see this base MSRP rising when it comes to AIB manufacturers.
The AMD RX 7900 XT might undercut the RTX 4080, but it is also notably less powerful than Nvidia’s GPU. For more competitive performance, you might have to look towards the RX 7900 XTX, instead. While this card is indeed powerful for the price, it could stand to be a bit cheaper, considering for just $100 more you could get a much more powerful graphics card.

AMD has also formalized the specifications of the RX 7900 XT, the GPU is set to do battle with the upcoming RTX 4080. In real-world benchmarks, the RX 7900 XT manages to compete, at around 7% slower than the RTX 4080 in pure rasterization workloads, as we found in our review. Howevet, it lags behind in terms of raw ray tracing performance, too. Additionally RX 7900 XTX can be had for just $100 more, and provides a healthy spec bump across the board, too.

The RX 7900 XTX is faster than the RX 7900 XT. The GPU is also going to be using PCIe 5.0. Though, we’re not anticipating that you’re going to bottleneck the GPU, should you be using a PCIe 4.0 board, instead. One of the biggest points about this GPU is that it will be using a new DisplayPort standard, which is capable of much more bandwidth than its predecessor.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT benchmarks
In our benchmarks, we found that the RX 7900 XT manages to achieve 406 FPS in Overwatch 2 at 1440p at Ultra settings. In CS:GO, we also managed to achieve around 399 FPS at 1440p. In synthetic benchmarks, we found that the RX 7900 XT managed to achieve a Time Spy Extreme score of 12979. In ray-traced workloads, the card scored 13074 in Port Royal, and 4697 in Speed Way.
The slightly more powerful RX 7900 XTX is 1.7x faster than the RX 6950 XT, so you should expect slightly less performance. Once again, AMD has kept quiet about the RX 7900 XT’s performance, but it can’t be too far behind the RX 7900 XTX. Moore’s Law is Dead states that the GPU is around 100% faster than the RX 6900 XT, which is now almost two years old.
RX 7900 XT vs RX 7900 XTX
The RX 7900 XT is $100 cheaper than the RX 7900 XTX, but it is also marginally slower than its bigger brother. For $100 more, you are almost certainly going to get more value from the RX 7900 XTX than the RX 7900 XT. This more basic model is slightly more cut down, and doesn’t have quite as aggressive power consumption.
However, for those looking at spending less than $1000 on a brand-new GPU, it’s tough to get better, especially as the RX 7900 XTX will almost certainly retail for slightly more than that. It’s a tough pill to swallow. However, for those looking for mid-range cards, you might have to wait a little while longer before getting yourself one of these brand-new GPUs.
